What are the effects of Solid Waste

People who live close to solid waste could be exposed to air pollutants emitted by the waste.

Solid waste does not just sit there; the contents break down, whether by rotting or time and seep into the area around it. This means the dirt and all surrounding areas absorb the pollution and become dangerous for people and animals. When solid waste is not properly treated it can increase the level of toxic chemicals and hazardous substances in soil.

  • Exposure to harmful substances: old batteries, electronics, paints, and other items containing chemicals can leach into the ground, contaminating water sources and soil, and potentially entering the food or water supply.
  • Air contamination: Decomposing organic matter, including food scraps, releases harmful gases, such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, which can impact respiratory health.
  • Decomposition and pathogens: Decaying organic matter releases harmful bacteria and fungi, while stagnant water in discarded containers can breed mosquitoes, posing health risks to anyone living on or near the property.
  • Soil contamination: Hazardous chemicals and pollutants can seep into the soil, affecting agricultural land, construction sites, and surrounding ecosystems.
  • Water pollution: Runoff from accumulated waste can contaminate groundwater, rivers, and lakes, threatening aquatic ecosystems and public health.
