Flooding

In Benton County, flooding may occur at any moment. Floods kill more people per year than tornadoes and lightning combined.  Floods can develop quickly (flash floods) or slowly over many days. It is important to be prepared for flooding if you live in a low-lying area or near a body of water.

Know the difference between a watch and a warning.

    – Flood Watch: “Be Aware.” Conditions are favorable for flooding to occur in your area.

    – Flood Warning: “Take Action.” Flooding is either happening or will occur shortly.

Nearly half of all flash flood fatalities are automobile-related. Just 6 inches of water can knock you down, and 12 inches of moving water can sweep your vehicle away. Remember “turn around, don’t drown”.

Please do not remove or bypass any driving barriers that are placed intentionally for the purpose of not driving through flooded areas. While your car may be able to cross some flood waters, do you know what condition the roadway is in or what hazards lie beneath the floodwater?
