Arkansas Homestead Tax Credit and Property Taxes
If you already own or are purchasing a home in Arkansas, it’s important to be aware of and understand how property taxes work and how the annual property tax might change after any purchase. If purchasing a new property, you may pay more in property taxes than the previous owner because state law requires the assessor to take the current taxable assessed value to full assessed value after the purchase. However, property tax relief is available through Amendment 79 to the Arkansas Constitution, AKA Property Tax Relief.
Homestead Tax Credit and Amendment 79 Benefits
- A tax credit of up to $600 on real property that qualifies as the owner’s homestead (principal residence)
- A 5% limit on the annual increase in the taxable value of a homestead property
- A 10% limit on the annual increase in the taxable value of a non-homestead property (commercial/rental/vacant land)
- A freeze on the taxable value of a homestead property owned by a person age 65 years or older; or 100% disabled
